Hi Rollo,
Like Moto Demon, I have fitted Metzeler Marathon tyres to my Savage. They are faultless. Here in England where it rains most of the time, the Metzelers are just perfect on the fast twisty country lanes in the wet. They run over joins in the road in the wet without twitching. If anything, these tyres give me too much confidence. I passed two sports bikes last weekend on a twisty road that's popular with bikers. I don't think I'd have passed them if it hadn't been raining.
About rear tyre size : the stock size is 140/80-15.
I have no experience of non standard sizes. However I have read the postings here. The 140/90-15 tyre is a little taller than standard and I've read that it rubs on the rear mudguard (fender) bolts on large bumps when riding with a passenger with the suspension set to soft.
The 150/80-15 is a little wider than standard and certain brands of this tyre can rub on the belt guard.
So, if you cruise in straight lines in the sunshine, the cheapest tyres will be sufficient. If you like to ride enthusiastically in the wet, get the Metzelers or some other top brand tyre.
Happy Savage Riding.
